# Does a VPN make your internet faster or slower?

# **Does a VPN Affect Internet Speed?**

Using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) may result in a slight reduction in internet speed. This is primarily due to the encryption process and the rerouting of data through a remote VPN server, which can introduce latency and affect both download and upload performance.

Several factors influence the extent of this impact, including:
* The geographical distance between you and the VPN server
* The server’s load and capacity
* The encryption protocol in use
* The quality of your original internet connection

While VPNs enhance online privacy and allow access to region-restricted content, their primary purpose is not to improve speed. If you experience significant slowdowns while connected to a VPN, consider switching to a different server or adjusting the protocol settings within the VPN application.
